LAST WEEK’S SPEAKER:

Erica Schneider, Hartford Vo-Tech Executive Director, and co-op coordinator Vicky Trombly offered a presentation on the status of Hartford Area Career and Technical Center (HACTC), which has full enrollment in all of its programs, particularly in the health areas where employment opportunities abound. The Powerpoint presentation they shared offered pictures and brief overviews of each program, illustrating the hands-on nature of the programs and the work opportunities available to students. There are currently 330 students enrolled in HACTC programs and 30 students who qualified for the National Technical Honor Society, an analog to the National Honor Society in traditional high schools. The high enrollments helped HACTC meet its budget, which is based on tuition payments. The only program that has struggled of late is the one designed to train preschool providers.

LAST WEEK’S ROTARIAN OF THE WEEK:

Last week’s “Rotarian of the Week”, Jed Williamson, regaled the club with anecdotes about caddying in upstate NY for Edward R. Murrow and having Lowell Thomas, Sr. as his ski instructor. His father’s occupation as the manager of a 60-acre pheasant farm introduced Jed to the joys of being outdoors, a passion that he pursued throughout his life. Jed’s career took him to Alaska, virtually every challenging mountain range in the world, and ultimately resulted in him leading Outward Bound trips, designing a Master of Arts for Outdoor Education at UNH, and leading Sterling College, an experiential-based program in Craftsbury, VT. Jed’s shared his experiences and expertise through volunteer activities and by leading several OSHER courses over the years. His career and his life exemplify the Rotary motto.
