LAST WEEK’S SPEAKER:

Kevin Wenger introduced Eve Loomis, Habitat for the Humanity’s ED, our first Zoom speaker since we “went hybrid” at Jesse’s. Eve, who has led Habitat the Upper Valley Habitat since 2020, described how they fixed the shoddy work that led to a $27,000 bill for an unwitting homeowner and their ongoing projects in Lebanon. She described the painstaking process Habitat follows for construction, noting that even in NH projects Habitat meets VT’s standards for energy efficiency, installing r-80 ceiling, r-40 walls, and green heating systems that run solely on electricity. Habitat also uses a thorough process to identify qualified homeowners, all of whom need to be able to afford to pay for a low interest mortgage, are expected to put in 300 hours of “sweat equity”, and a $1000 down payment. Eve also explained the mortgage process which keeps house affordable and disallows “flipping” properties. Eve described the means of recruiting volunteers to work on site, noting that they need to be 14+ to volunteer and noting that there are limits to the tasks they can undertake until they are over 18. She also noted that the Upper Valley Habitat is seeking $100,000 in donations that will help them get matching funds from a state resource. In response to questions Eve noted that Habitat relies exclusively on grants and donors and not government sources and reported that the Upper Valley Habitat is currently building one house every three years.

LAST WEEK’S ROTARIAN OF THE WEEK:

David Allen concluded the opening festivities by inducting Diane Travis as our newest member… and then handed the dais over to Diane who was also THIS WEEK’S ROTARIAN OF THE WEEK. After graduating from Hampshire College as an undergraduate and getting an advanced degree in library science from the University of Maryland, Diane worked in the metropolitan DC area and Maine before landing an assignment at Dartmouth College. Two years ago Diane moved to Peacham VT where she serves as an EMT for their local fire department and has two cats. The Technology Team is thrilled to have Diane as a member as she is well versed in Owl, PC, and video projector technology.
