LAST WEEK’S SPEAKER:

Dartmouth College’s Interim Provost David Kotz provided us with his insights on Dartmouth’s current and future plans for facilities and academics. He reported on the status of the new engineering and computing facilities on the west end of the campus, both of which are scheduled to open in March of this year. He described the ongoing renovations to Dartmouth Hall, the planned upgrades to the Hopkins Center, and the college’s intention to build more dormitories along Lyme Road, a decision he predicted would get some pushback from the community. He noted that upgrading and expanding student housing is important for the college, though he emphasized that they have no intention of expanding the number of undergraduates.

He reported that Dartmouth recently received two substantial grants that will help them enhance their academics in the future: a $40,000,000 anonymous gift to allow need-blind admissions for foreign students and a $25,000,000 grant from the Byrne Foundation to help the Medical School with cancer research.

In response to questions from club members, Dr. Kotz assured alums that there was no plan to make Dartmouth a university. He also reported that the college would be providing shuttle services for the new off-campus housing for graduate students on Mount Support Road and would likely consider some kind of shuttle for facilities built along Lyme Road.
