THIS WEEK’S PROGRAM

We have two speakers this week, both of whom will offer us insights into events that dominate the news. Todd Allen will introduce Sam Hooper, CEO of the Vermont Glove Company who will describe how his company pivoted from making high quality gloves to high quality masksDavid Allen will introduce his brother, Rob Allen, who served for more than 20 years with the Minneapolis Police Department in roles that ranged from patrol officer to Deputy Chief of Police. He received national acclaim in 2007 for his performance as incident commander at the I-35W bridge collapse. One of his longer assignments with the MPD was as commander of the 3rd Precinct, which was burned down last week. He was in command of the 3rd Precinct during the years when Derek Chauvin, the officer accused of murdering a civilian last week, graduated from Police Academy and began his MPD career. Rob will share his perspectives on the recent tragedies in Minneapolis.

The Zoom Room opens at 11:45 AM. Liam McCarthy begins the official meeting at noon at which point it’s best if all mikes are muted. After our opening Pledge of Allegiance and opening inspiration Liam will hand off the virtual podium to Todd who will introduce our first speaker.

LAST WEEK’S ANNOUNCEMENTS

Len Cadwallader offered a Happy Dollar in honor of Nick Harvey, who was recognized for his many years of service in Hanover Rotary. Len noted that Nick recruited him to join the club and he greatly appreciated the invitation and Nick's work on behalf of Rotary.

Liam McCarthy briefed the club members on the recent meeting of the Board, sharing three decisions made. First, under Heidi Postupak’s leadership and with the support of the counselling staff at Hanover High School the club will be playing a more active role in identifying the recipient of our club’s scholarships. Secondly, the club is looking for ideas on ways we can backfill the revenue we will be losing in 2020 as a result of not holding the auction. The Board was pleased that it was able to offer substantial support to local non-profits during the Covid-19 outbreak but realizes that such donations will not be possible if we don’t secure sufficient revenues in the months ahead. Finally, and unsurprisingly, the town is cancelling its 4thof July festivities which means we will not be cooking on the green this year or marching in the parade.

Someone won the virtual raffle for a $10 discount when Jesse’s reopens sometime in the future… but I failed to get the name. I trust that I will get this name and next week’s winner.

DONATIONS IN LIEU OF MEALS

Liam McCarthy urged club members to consider making donations to the club’s Covid 19 Fund in lieu of paying for lunches at Jesse’s, which is saving members $18/week. Here’s the link to make your donation!

REMINDER: DUES DUE SOON!

Tom Hall sent an email late last week reminding club members that the annual club dues ($180) must be paid by June 25, 2020 or a late fee of $25.00 will be assessed. If dues are not received within 30 days after the beginning of the fiscal year (i.e.by July 31), the club will assume that you are withdrawing from membership of the Hanover Rotary Club. In the email he suggested that in addition to the check made out to “Rotary Club of Hanover, NH” club members might want to include a $50 donation for the “Rotary International Foundation”. Checks should be sent to: Rotary Club of Hanover, NH; P. O. Box 381; Hanover, NH 03755.

LAST WEEK’S PROGRAM

Danny Blanchflower offered us a wealth of insights and mind-blowing statistics, all of which are available on the slides and recording I will send as an addendum to the Newsletter. Among Danny’s data points on the slides he shared:
  • The real unemployment figures are much higher than those reported in the media: at 19% nationally as compared to the 14% reported.
  • The unemployment rate is likely to hit 25% in the next couple of weeks, making it the highest since the Depression and the fasted plummet ever.
  • The happiness index in Great Britain crashed from 50% to 25% in a matter of weeks and has now plateaued at 40%, the lowest on record.
  • The non-college educated whites have suffered the most in the downturn of the economy with 1 out of eight experiencing depression
In response to questions at the end of his presentation, Danny offered these additional insights:
  • A rearmament ethos is needed at the federal level: one that calls for unlimited spending
  • The Federal Reserve has broad authority to purchase anything it wishes, including state and local bonds that may or may not be solid investments. This will enable local and state governments to remain solvent if the government fails to provide sufficient stimulus funds.
  • Air traffic is down 95%
  • Shopping malls are likely closed forever
As always, Danny gave us a lot of stunning and thought provoking information. Here's the recording of his talk:

Coming Attractions:

June 10 – Nan Carroll will introduce Casey Rogers, the Director of The Ellen Fund.  Casey will ZOOM in from Montecito, CA. and speak to us on : A behind the scenes look at launching the Ellen Fund,  Ellen Degeneres’ work supporting global efforts to save endangered species. We'll learn about the mission and future plans of The Ellen Fund and hear about their work with the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund in Rwanda.

June 17 – Heather Drinan introduces Ashley Doolittle from the Center for Social Impact at Dartmouth.

June 24 – Todd Allen introduces Jim Feinson, CEO of Gardener's Supply

July 1 – Changeover meeting, where our current President Liam McCarthy steps down and hands the gavel to incoming President Todd Allen.

July 8 – Casey Aldrich introduces her colleague Anne Sosin who oversees the Global Health Initiative at the Dickey Center who will talk to us about the work she is doing around the pandemic on campus and with partner organizations in developing countries.
As noted in last week’s bulletin and at the meeting, (and as Nan Carroll and David Allen have demonstrated) with Zoom meetings we could invite speakers from faraway places (i.e. outside of driving distance of Jesse’s) to share ideas and insights.

Thanks to those who stepped up to share ideas for speakers! It’s never too soon to start planning for the balance of the summer!
