Hanover Rotary Club — A Profile

The Hanover Rotary Club is a service organization comprised of over 90 men and women representing the business, professional and education sectors of Hanover, N.H., and Norwich, Vt.

Chartered in 1925, Hanover Rotary is one of four Rotary clubs in the Upper Valley. Hanover Rotary is the largest club in Rotary International District 7850, which covers sections of New Hampshire, Vermont and the Province of Quebec.

Guided by the Rotary International motto, Service Above Self, Hanover Rotary’s activities are grounded in a number of annual events and projects that support local, regional, national, and international initiatives under the auspices of its foundation, Hanover Rotary Charities.

The largest among several annual events sponsored by Hanover Rotary is the Wine Tasting Auction that in recent years has been held at Hypertherm. In 2010, this event raised over $67,000 that was shared between Hanover Rotary Charities and the co-host, Willing Hands. In past years, co-hosts have included The Family Place, WISE, Good Beginnings, the Children’s Literacy Fund (CLiF,) Hanover’s Howe Library, and the Upper Valley Hostel.

Other annual events include a holiday season bell-ringing project on Main Street in Hanover that raises over $6,000 annually for LISTEN’s community projects, a pancake breakfast that raises money for international projects including Grass Roots Soccer, and the July 4 community barbecue held on the Dartmouth Green.

Hanover Rotary participates in an international student exchange that brings a foreign student to Hanover High School and sponsors a HHS student’s year of study abroad. The Club also is active in the regional Rotary Youth Leadership Exchange.

Through the Rotary International Foundation, Hanover Rotary joins over 33,000 Rotary clubs in over 200 countries in supporting numerous broad initiatives, most notably the Polio Plus campaign that, over the past 25 years, has virtually eradicated polio.

The club meets every Wednesday, 12 noon to 1:30 p.m., at the Hanover Inn. This collegial gathering includes lunch, a brief business meeting, and a 30-minute program. Guest speakers discuss a variety of topics of general interest including business, health care, and public service.

Annual membership dues are $155. The weekly luncheon cost is currently $14. Members are encouraged to attend at least 50 percent of the weekly meetings and are expected to take part in the Club’s community service efforts.

Hanover, NH is situated in the Upper Valley of the Connecticut River, on the western border of New Hampshire.  The home of Dartmouth College, Hanover also boasts the nation’s first interstate school district (which it shares with Norwich, VT,) created by an act of Congress in 1963.  The Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center is a leading teaching hospital and research center.  The Hanover area also features a wide range of cultural and outdoor activities, an array of small and medium and large businesses, and an abundance of non-profit institutions.  See more at Useful Links.
